Kanye's Controversy
Rapper Kanye West created a scandal on NBC Friday during the station's hurricane relief telethon when he called President George W. Bush a racist.
West stated his belief that the government purposely arranged to "help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible."
West also said, "We already realized a lot of the people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way, and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us."
NBC says the rapper's remarks were unscripted and "do not represent the views of the networks." West turned his anger at the media as well saying, "I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food."
The rapper also said he has tried not to watch the media coverage of the hurricane aftermath because it is so devastating, but will now speak to his business manager to find out how much money he can give to help.
West's remarks left comedian Mike Myers, who appeared in the segment with him, dumbfounded. NBC quickly cut to comedian Chris Tucker after West said, "George Bush doesn't care about black people." NBC edited the rapper's comments from the west coast broadcast.
Kanye West's latest album Late Registration hit stores on Tuesday.
