No American Idol for Memphis
Tryouts for season five of American Idol were supposed to take place today in Memphis, Tennessee, but were cancelled due to hurricane relief efforts. Producers said that another city will host the auditions, replacing Memphis, but that city has not been determined yet. Tryouts are scheduled to continue in Denver on Sept. 11 and in Chicago on Sept. 16.
Memphis is currently hosting as many as 10,000 hurricane evacuees from Louisiana and Mississippi. Vice president of creative services at FOX's affiliate WHBQ-TV, Paul Sloan, told The Commercial Appeal, "Obviously we're disappointed like everyone else is. But I think everyone would agree that we didn't want to do some happy 'hey look American Idol has come to town!' while covering hurricane victims."
Season five of American Idol is set to premiere in January.
