Rock Rules at MTV Europe Music Awards
The MTV Europe Music Awards aired live on Thursday from Lisbon, Portugal. Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, known in America as Ali G, hosted the show as Kazakh television personality Borat. Madonna opened the show in a giant glitter ball with the first live performance of her new single "Hung Up." Later on in the show, actor and 30 Seconds to Mars front man Jared Leto took the stage and criticized President Bush.
American acts were able to take a few European Music Award categories. American punk band Green Day came home with the Best Rock Act and Best Album awards. Best Hip Hop Act went to Snoop Dogg and Alicia Keys was crowned Best R& B Act. The Best Pop category went to the Black Eyed Peas while System of a Down took Best Alternative. Coldplay's "Speed of Sound" was awarded best song. The British band also won Best United Kingdom and Ireland act. Shakira won Best Female Act while Robbie Williams stole the male category. Williams took time out of his acceptance speech to praise Madonna and her performance. The Gorillaz performed as holograms and were named Best Group. The Chemical Brothers' "Believe" won best video.
