FOX will carry American Idol for at least four more seasons.
CKX Inc. and 19 Entertainment sealed a deal with FOX, FremantleMedia, Sony BMG and Simon Cowell, which will allow at least four more seasons of American Idol. After the fourth season, there will be an option for two more. With the deal, FOX will get an increased licensing fee and advertising rates. The network will also create a website solely for the show and have the rights to wireless content like ringtones and videos. Within the next five years, FOX will air two original shows created by 19 Entertainment and FremantleMedia. Cowell committed to at least five seasons as judge of the singing competition, beginning with the show’s fifth season, which premieres in January. Sony BMG will continue to be the record label used by the show.
Last week, 19 Entertainment settled a lawsuit with Cowell, which claimed that his show X Factor was similar to American Idol.
