King of the Weekend Box Office

Kong crushes the competition, but doesn't earn as much as expected.

King Kong topped the box office this weekend, raking in $50.1 million. Despite taking the number one spot, the some consider the film a flop because of the hefty budget it took to make the film, and the massive amounts of promotion behind it.

As part of its promotion, the film aligned with the New York State Lottery to create King Kong Millions, which guaranteed the winner at least $50 million. Ironically, the winner received just about the same amount of money the film earned in its opening weekend.

Last week's number one film, "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," dropped a spot to number two with $31.1 million, while the holiday film "The Family Stone" debuted at number three, bringing in $12.7 million. Five weeks after its release, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" dropped to number four with $5.9 million.

"Syriana" came in at number five with $5.4 million followed by "Walk the Line" at number six. "Yours, Mine & Ours" was the seventh most watched film this weekend, with "Brokeback Mountain," "Just Friends" and "Aeon Flux" rounding out the top ten.
