Spielberg Interested in Mary Poppins
Maybe Steven Spielberg needs a change of subject matter after the release of his highly controversial film Munich. Nobody seems happy with the film, which tries to explore the fine lines of right and wrong when dealing with terrorism, retribution, and their aftermath. Thankfully, it seems that he might be taking on a film with a subject matter that nobody could be dissatisfied with - unless they had a secret gripe against flying nannies with the power to enchant small children. That's right, Spielberg has an expressed an interest in remaking the ever-popular Mary Poppins in a collaboration with London stage director Sir Richard Eyre. A stage version of the children's classic directed by Eyre will open at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theater in October of 2006 with new songs and additional lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drew. Sir Eyre has spoken publicly of his possible partnership with Spielberg in British newspaper The Independent. "We've talked about it a lot. It will hard to outdo the original but kids love the story and I'm sure the remake will be a real success."
