Capote, the biopic of "In Cold Blood" author Truman Capote, was named the best film of 2005 by the National Society of Film Critics. Phillip Seymour Hoffman ("The Talented Mr. Ripley") also earned best actor, for his portrayal of the novelist and playwright Capote during his investigations of the murder of a Kansas farming family. Despite this win, however, "Capote" has trailed in the box office after the release of Ang Lee's multi-Golden Globe-nominated love story of two gay cowboys, "Brokeback Mountain." Other awards given by the National Society of Film Critics were best actress to Reese Witherspoon for her role in the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk the Line," and David Cronenberg for best director for the graphic novel adaptation "A History of Violence."
