American Idol runner-up Diana DeGarmo might have dodged a bullet by not winning the TV prize. She joins the cast of the Broadway hit Hairspray on February 7, portraying the heroine's best friend Penny Pingleton. The musical, which is based on a cult film by John Waters, opened on Broadway in August 2002. The story is about an overweight Baltimore teenager who wants to be on a TV dance show. Shannon Durig plays the lead, and John Pinette is the lead's full-figured mother.
