Hilary Spurling, after 15 years of research and writing, finally saw her works bear fruit as her biography of the French artist Henri Matisse won her the $300,000 Whitbread Prize. Despite judges calling the book a “masterpiece,” this was the closest vote the competition has had yet. “I’ve never been on a judging panel which was as close. There was no blood on the carpet but it was very heated,” said judge Michael Morpurgo. “[She] had made us see Matisse in a new light.” This is the first biography of Matisse since the artist’s death 50 years ago. This is the last year of the $300,000 Whitbread sponsorship.
