Oprah Disavows Frey's "Pieces"

Oprah Winfrey, who brought author James Frey to fame when she heavily publicized his allegedly false memoir, "A Million Little Pieces," has now declared that defending the author was "a mistake." "I left the impression that the truth does not matter," said Oprah. "That is not what I believe." On a transcript displayed on the Oprah Winfrey show, Oprah confronted Frey via the telephone: "I have to say it is difficult for me to talk to you because I really feel duped... I feel that you have betrayed millions of readers." Frey responded, "I mean, what was true is there was that person. Every one of the people in the book existed....I altered things about all of them."
