Oscar Nomination Announced Today
31-Jan-2006
Written by: Jennifer O'Reilly

Who got nominated? Who didn’t?

Today’s the day we’ve all been waiting for - the Oscar nominations have finally landed, and there is a lot for movie aficionados to discuss and debate.

The first thing worth noting about the Oscar nominations is the remarkable work of George Clooney, who was nominated in three categories for two separate movies. Clooney got the nod for best director and best original screenplay for Good Night and Good Luck, while also being nominated for a best supporting actor Oscar for his work in Syriana. This makes him the only director in the history of the awards to be nominated for an acting award for a separate picture.

The best picture category had at least one surprise and one snub. The category includes Munich, Capote, Good Night and Good Luck, and of course, Brokeback Mountain. However, the Johnny Cash biopic was not nominated, with the nod instead going to the racial drama Crash.

Judi Dench, Keira Knightly, Felicity Huffman, Reese Witherspoon, and Charlize Theron were all nominated in the best actress category. Missing from that group was Memoirs of a Geisha Ziyi Zhang, who was predicted to get a nod, and Gwenyth Paltrow in Proof, whose performance certainly deserved her one.

Nominated in the best actor category were Phillip Seymour Hoffman, David Strathairn, Terrence Howard, Joaquin Phoenix, and Heath Ledger.

Other interesting tidbits from the Oscar nomination news: Woody Allen was nominated for the 21st time for his work writing Match Point; Syriana’s writers were nominated in the best original screenplay although they claim it is based on the writings of former CIA agent Robert Baer; and one of the nominees for best song is “It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp,” from the movie Hustle and Flow. I can’t wait to see that one performed with full orchestra on the prestigious Academy stage.
