Psuedo-memoirist James Frey continues to be under fire for his fictitious “memoir” “A Million Little Pieces,” which online investigative news journal “The Smoking Gun” reported as a fraud a few weeks ago. After initial defending of the writer, Oprah Winfrey, whose publicity launched the book’s sales, has distanced herself from Frey, and even potential optioning of the book for a film is now under debate. Furthermore, Frey has had to publish an advertisement in USA Today to apologize to readers, and publisher Riverhead has refused to sell any more copies of “Pieces” without a revised author’s note. The book, which chronicles the author’s 87-day stay in prison, has had a million little holes poked into its credibility, from small details to the alleged suicide of his girlfriend, who he had written hung herself. She had in fact slit her wrists.
