Madonna "Hung Up" On Cartoons For Grammys

Virtual band Gorillaz will partner with the mad mama of pop for the Grammy opener.

It's hard to see Gorillaz live.

The British concept band created by Blur singer Damon Albarn and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett features four drawn members by the names of 2D, Murdoc, Noodle and Russel -- for which reason they had never done a "live show" until this year, when the band members were shown onscreen with a backup band behind.

But that performance is set to be repeated at the 2005 Grammy Awards Feb. 8, along with a real-life duet partner -- Madonna herself. The 48th annual awards are billing the performance as the first ever network television 3D color animation performance.

Gorillaz is up for four Grammys this year, three for their De La Soul duet "Feel Good Inc." off this year's album "Demon Days" (one of which is for their music video) and one for that album's first single, "Dirty Harry." Madonna herself has five Grammys, although she is not a nominee this year.

Other noted pairings that have been announced for the event include Christina Aguilera and Herbie Hancock and Aerosmith with Joss Stone. Oscar nominee Matt Dillon and actress Queen Latifah number among the celebrity presenters for the ceremony, which will air live on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
