Industry executives have stated that China has banned 2005's "Memoirs of a Geisha," concerned with possibly restarting anti-Japanese sentiment. "It is true that the film will not be released in China, according to a letter we received from China Film," Li Chow, general manager for Sony's Columbia Tristar Pictures in Beijing, told Agence France-Presse. The film was due to be released February 9th. The fears of Chinese officials is that the two actresses of the film, who play Japanese courtesans, would evoke fears of Japanese aggression towards the Chinese mainlanders during World War II.
