Disney’s “High School“ Climbs the Billboard Charts
3-Feb-2006
Written by: Ellen Wernecke

Soundtrack to TV movie the surprising new entree on the Billboard 200.

Who wants to hear a "High School Musical"? Apparently, a lot of people.

While Beyoncé's "Check On It" featuring Slim Thug holds steady at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for a second week, a single from the Disney television movie "High School Musical" made the charts' biggest jump in history, leaping from 86th last week to 4th this week.

What's more impressive about Zac Efron and Vanessa Anne Hudgens' "Breaking Free" is that it is not a radio single, but can only be obtained via digital download. The song is already Disney Radio's highest charted hit ever, and if the Hot 100 chart mirrors Billboard's digital downloads chart, it will overtake Knowles and company very soon.

"High School Musical," a Friday-night feature about a pair of mismatched teen wannabe actors, first aired Jan. 20 on The Disney Channel. The musical spawned four other powerful debuts on the Hot 200 this week, including cast numbers "We're All In This Together" (which charts at no. 34) and "Stick to the Status Quo" (no. 43).

Other number-ones this week on the Billboard charts include Mary J. Blige on R&B/Hip-Hop, Daddy Yankee on the Hot Latin Chart, Weezer on the Modern Rock chart and Nelly and Paul Wall on the Hot Ringtones chart.
