The author of the JT LeRoy books, which chronicle the writer’s life as a drug addict male prostitute, has been revealed to be none other than a 40-year-old woman.
The author of the JT LeRoy books, which chronicle the writer’s life as a drug addict male prostitute, has been revealed to be none other than a 40-year-old woman. The persona of LeRoy was a hoax created by writer Laura Albert in order to push her writing to the forefront, said former partner Geoffrey Knoop. He told the BBC that the relationship broke down after 16 years due to Albert keeping her identity secret. The author, who always appeared in dark glasses, a wig, and a hat, with Albert always in tow, was revealed by the New York Times as none other than Savannah Knoop, Geoffrey’s half-sister. The “LeRoy” books include Sarah and The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things, both bestsellers and developing film projects in their own right. Albert has yet to confirm or deny the allegations, although Knoop’s lawyer, Eric Feig, stated that, “[Geoffrey’s] wanted to come clean and let JT fade away.”
