Actress Salma Hayek is reaching out to battered women in her native Mexico.
According to the Associated Press, Hayek, best known for her Oscar nominated role in the 2002 film "Frida" made a $25,000 donation Tuesday to a battered woman's shelter in her hometown Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. She donated $50,000 to anti-domestic violence groups in the city of Monterrey, north of Mexico City.
Working with the "Speak Out Against Violence" campaign of the Avon Foundation, Hayek acknowledges domestic violence is a global problem. According to statistics provided by the Avon Foundation, one in three women worldwide suffers some type of domestic abuse.
"Every woman who thinks she is the only victim of violence has to know that there are many more," Hayek said at a Mexico City news conference.
Hayek is in Mexico promoting the release of her new movie "Bandidas" a Western about two female outlaws in 19th Century Mexico. The film co-stars actress Penelope Cruz.
