Self improvement through the DVD.
Hello to all the Paula Abdul fans. Your American Idol has joined the ranks of the workout people. In “Cardio Cheer”, she introduces the workout style and gives hints for application of the exercise. The exercises encourage well rounded health, not just a powerful body part. In a 5 disc set, in a park-like setting, and in the California sun, Paula sweats for me. Ok, not exactly for me, but remember for some people exercise is a spectator sport.
A different form of exercise is the subject of “Girl 6”. Theresa Randle stars as a telephone talker with an ability to deliver audio dreams. Yes, this form of exercise is at the end of the phone and through the ears. Also starring Spike Lee and Isaiah Washington, this movie is about the occasional conflict between what a person does for a living and who they really are. Of course the viewer is left to reason out who they are, but I will wait for a honey call since I saw the movie.
To continue the fun and games, but for the younger crowd, The Real Ghostbusters have released three discs based on their TV series under the titles of “Spooky Spirits”, “Slimefighters” and “Creatures of the Night”. At almost 90 minutes each, parents can plunk the kid’s bleary eyes in front of the TV for four and half hours of cartoons, while they either exercise with Paula’s girls or give a call to Theresa. I am sweating at the thought.
Veggie Tales is soon to release a new episode called “Sheerluck Holmes and the Golden Ruler”. I include it here because it stars Larry the Cucumber and Bob the Tomato. It is a children’s movie that has clean, crisp, colorful graphics and ethical themes delivered in a fun fashion. The bottom line is: if the parents can’t develop their kids into reasonable citizens, then let the Cucumber do it. They also appear on the TV so check your local stations and try them out.
Speaking of TV, we have been sent some new releases of TV shows. “Babylon 5: the Legend of the Rangers” is a full length movie based on the show. The popularity of the show is carried over into a setting that further proves Trekkis are right and the Suits were wrong. I suppose I can forgive them because the Suits did bring us “The Fresh Prince of Belair” and “Living Single”. What makes these DVDs so special is that this was the start of some real top stars. In particular I find myself fascinated by the skill and development of both Will Smith and Queen Latifah. Look over these early years of both and enjoy!
Having just come back from Nashville where we ate our way down Main Street, danced at the Wild Horse Saloon and cheered at the Grand Ole Opry, I have come to appreciate the difference between Country and Cowboy. Country welcomes you home, makes you laugh and doesn’t put on airs. All of which makes for the fertile barnyard soil of “Blue Collar TV” Volume 2. This is a continuation of Volume 1, but with different material so they called it Volume 2. I see the disc has some sections with subtitles in English, French and Spanish. So if you don’t speak these languages, you won’t know when to laugh.
