Lawyer Says Da Vinci Code Author Did Not Copy Material
1-Mar-2006
Written by: David Pepose
Dan Brown, while admitting to having read the book “The Holy Blood, and the Holy Grail,“ has denied plagiarism allegations.
The truth is out there: but for author Dan Brown, that truth might not be so pretty. The “Da Vinci Code” author has been embroiled in a legal suit by historians Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh, who allege that Brown plagiarized many points from their bestselling book “The Holy Blood, and the Holy Grail,” which, like the Da Vinci Code, claimed that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had children who eventually married into the French monarchy. “Holy Grail” also speculated that a secret society based in France is working to bring those descendants back to the European thrones. That being said, publisher Random House’s lawyer, John Baldwin, told Reuters “The Da Vinci Code doesn’t actually have many of the points of the central theme… we say that’s fatal to their case.” Brown has admitted that he looked at Baigent and Leigh’s book while writing his best-selling novel, even going so far as to add an anagram of their names to one of his characters: Sir Leigh Teabing, who refers to “Holy Grail” in the novel. Brown has steadfastly declared, however, that an outline of the book was already written before he and his wife began research.
