Written by: Natalie Goode
Patrick Dempsey who stars in “Grey’s Anatomy“ says he struggled through his childhood after being diagnosed with dyslexia at 12 years old.
Dempsey who plays the heartthrob neurosurgeon Dr. Dick Shephard on the ABC series, tells Barbara Walters in an interview on the "The Barbara Walters Special" that he wouldn't be where he is today without the learning disability.
"It’s given me a perspective of-you have to keep working," Dempsey tells Walters. "I have never given up."
Dempsey says he still struggles with the disability that makes reading, writing and spelling difficult, while reading scripts and memorizing his lines. "I think that's when I get the most insecure...it's very hard for me to read it off the page," he says. "I need to memorize it, in order to go on."
The 25th edition of Walters Oscar special will air tonight at 10 p.m. EST, and it will also include interviews with Matthew McConaughey, Oscar nominee George Clooney and Mariah Carey.
The Oscars will air Sunday on ABC (8 p.m. EST)
