Mel Gibson To Speak Mayan At Oscars

Gibson pledges only to make movies in dead languages from now on.
Consider it a free preview of his next feature.
Mel Gibson will be promoting his adventure drama "Apocalypto" at the Oscars on Sunday by speaking the ancient Mayan language in which the film was shot.
Gibson's last movie, 2004's "The Passion of the Christ," featured Latin and Aramaic, but apparently he didn't feel that those languages were obscure enough to "shake up the genre," as he told "Time Magazine" he wanted to do.
Set in the rain forests of southern Mexico, "Apocalypto" chronicles the life of a tribe in the pre-Columbian error facing massive climate change -- which may or may not be a statement on the current global-warming debate being raged in Washington DC. Gibson won't comment on whether the film has the religious bent of "The Passion," though insiders say it demonizes ancient Mayan religions.
