Another Triumph for “Brokeback Mountain“ At Independent Spirit Awards
4-Mar-2006
Written by: Ellen Wernecke

Chalk up another one for the cowboys whose love will never grow old.

'Twas the night before Oscars, and Ang Lee wasn't just hanging out at home.

Instead, the director of gay Western drama "Brokeback Mountain" picked up a directing award and got to see his latest picture named best independent film of the year at the Independent Spirit Awards, which honor low-budget (and sometimes low-profile) movies including many of this year's Best Picture nominees and other critically acclaimed films.

Philip Seymour Hoffman took home best male actor for "Capote," an award which he is expected to win Sunday night at the Oscars as well. At the ceremony Hoffman applauded his "fantastic" fellow nominees, David Strathairn ("Good Night, and Good Luck"), Terrence Howard ("Hustle & Flow"), Heath Ledger ("Brokeback Mountain") and Jeff Daniels ("The Squid and the Whale"). "Capote" also picked up best screenplay.

"Desperate Housewives"' Felicity Huffman was named best actress for "Transamerica," in which she plays a male-to-female transsexual who discovers she has a grown son she never knew about. Huffman is expected to duke the Best Actress Oscar race out with Reese Witherspoon ("Walk the Line") on Sunday.

"Crash" took best first feature for director Paul Haggis (who adapted last year's Best Picture "Million Dollar Baby" for Clint Eastwood) and best supporting actress for Oscar long shot Matt Dillon. And the virtually unknown Amy Adams of "Junebug" swept in to take best supporting actress.

The Independent Spirit Awards sometimes provide a preview of Oscar night, but not always: Last year "Sideways" took the best picture at one and lost to "Million Dollar Baby" for the other. But this year, the only Best Picture nominee not represented at the Independent Spirits was Stephen Spielberg's "Munich," which is not expected to win Best Picture.
