OscarWatch: Green Cars, Red Carpet
4-Mar-2006
Written by: Ellen Wernecke
Some stars will arrive on the red carpet for the Oscars Sunday night driving eco-friendly “green“ cars.
Just this once, green doesn't stand for money.
Oscar nominees Frances McDormand (best supporting actress, "North Country"), Jake Gyllenhaal (best supporting actor, "Brokeback Mountain") and Joaquin Phoenix (best actor, "Walk the Line") will arrive at the Kodak Theatre in Toyota or Lexus hybrid vehicles sponsored by Toyota Motor Corp. for their fourth annual "Red Carpet, Green Cars" event. Triple nominee George Clooney is also expected to participate in the event along with 21 other stars who will be showing off the Prius, the RX hybrid and the new hybrid Camry.
As President Bush urges the nation to change its dependence on foreign oil, hybrids are finally being seen as chic instead of kooky. Larry David's eponymous character in HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm" even drives one thanks to his wife, eco-activist Laurie David.
Toyota isn't the only one who will try and green up the red carpet; the producer of "Crash" will arrive in a hybrid Mercury Mariner from Ford, and Gyllenhaal's posse will ride in style in a hybrid Ford Excursion.
