A quick rundown of the ladies of the Oscars
Below are some key facts on the best actress race:
Reese Witherspoon, 29. Her performance as the country music princess who falls for Nashville outlaw Johnny Cash has already earned trophies at the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards and the Screen Actors Guild.
Judi Dench, 71. She portrayed a widow who opens a burlesque theater in London during World War Two in the independent movie “Mrs. Henderson Presents.” She has been nominated five times.
Felicity Huffman, 43. Her role as a preoperative transsexual in the acclaimed independent movie “Transamerica” has made her a favorite among critics. The Emmy-winning star of the hit prime-time TV soap “Desperate Housewives” is considered Witherspoon’s closest rival.
Charlize Theron, 30. She played a rabble-rousing mine worker in the fact-based drama “North Country.” Theron has said she has little chance of an Oscar repeat, referring to her role in “Monster.”
Keira Knightley, 20. She played the marriage-minded heroine Elizabeth Bennet in the period drama “Pride & Prejudice,” based on the Jane Austen novel. She would be the youngest winner ever in this category.
