A new Code to Crack
27-Apr-2006
Written by: Carrie Ng
Judge Peter Smith, who aquitted “Da Vinci Code“ author Dan Brown, slipped a cryptic message into Brown’s trial judgment.
London’s legal society has been sent into a mind boggling state trying to decipher Judge Peter Smith’s code that he inserted into his April 7 judgment, which cleared Brown of plagiarism charges.
Apparently the entire city has put their best feet forward in an attempt to crack the code. The code is quite short, making it difficult to crack. According to U.S. cryptographer Elonka Dunin, of St. Charles, Mo., “"It's only a tiny snippet. If it were a few pages of code, it'd already be cracked."
The code has been vaguely described as appearances of italicized letters. So far the letters spell out "Smithy code," in reference to the Judge. The code appears to be consistent with the Judge’s generally pleasant/entertaining attitude. Stephens, a lawyer specializing in media law and copyright issues, commented that "He[Judge Smith] knew this was a judgment that would be of enormous interest…So I think he's playing to people who like intrigue."
