“How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got A Life“-Pulled
27-Apr-2006
Written by: Carrie Ng

The scandal of plagiarism has been solved, even though Miss Viswanathan holds to her initial claims that the copying was unintentional.

The recall is not going to be an easy one. “Opal Mehta” sold 9,600 copies, with another 55,000 copies shipped to stores. The future of the books is uncertain. They will be either stored, or destroyed.

In recent years literary skepticism has fallen under the section of memoirs. The question of factuality is usually at hand. The memoirs usually stay in stores though. However, Viswanathan’s novel commits a different literary deceit, and therefore, the publishers decided to pull the novel.

McCafferty, the author of the book that Viswanathan allegedly pulled passages from, has not seeked any restitutions yet. However, with the surrounding allegations impeding McCafferty’s new novel promotion, there may be more of a reason to seek a settlement.
