Tom Cruise So Unpopular He Makes Headlines
11-May-2006
Written by: Alexander Rogers
Where is your Scientology God now, Mr. Cruise! Bwa Ha Ha!
A recent poll conducted by the good folks at USA Today and Gallup might lead you to believe that Tom Cruise just isn't as popular anymore. The poll, which included the input of over 1,000 adults, found that only 35% had a favorable opinion of Cruise, while 51% were ready to wag their fingers at him. The news, coming on the heels of what some industry experts have dubbed a poor opening weekend performance for his latest film, "Mission Impossible III," have led some to question whether Cruise's star may have dimmed over the last few months.
Some journalists and entertainment junkies-er, experts claim that the almost ceaseless barrage of Cruise in the media in the three weeks leading up to the film may have hurt the film at the box office and soured the public's image of the industry's top gun (Get it? It's a joke! I'm funny). Critics say the star's weird romance with actress-turned-concubine, Katie Holmes, his incredible need to show what a faithful Scientologist he has become, and a couch-jumping incident on the set of Oprah has made the ever-fickle American audience tired of Cruises antics. "Pish-posh," say Cruise's pals, who point out that "MI:3" still looks to make a decent profit world-wide. If there has been too much of Cruise, insist his publicists, agents, handlers and spokespersons (you know, his "friends") then perhaps it is because of a hypocritical media establishment that delights in keeping front page. Oh, Zing!
Well, I do have to say on Cruise's behalf that it's not every star that can turn his apparent unpopularity into a story that continues to grab headlines in numerous publications and across the inter-web. Can we really say we've had enough of this guy if we can't shut up about him for one day?
