Lynyrd Skynyrd Frontman Hospitalized

Emergency appendectomy temporarily sidelines Van Zant.

Johnny Van Zant, frontman for Lynyrd Skynyrd, will be taking a little time off the current national tour. Examined by a doctor who determined the need for an emergency appendectomy, Van Zant underwent surgery at Stanford University Medical Center on Thursday and is recovering from the reportedly successful operation. Shows for the upcoming week have been canceled.

Lynyrd Skynyrd was inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame on March 13th. The original lead singer for the band, Ronnie Van Zant, was killed in a plane crash in 1977, along with backup singer Cassie Gaines and guitarist Steve Gaines. Lynyrd Skynyrd defined Southern Rock in the 70's with hits like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Freebird".

A new tour begins with 3 Doors Down on June 25th, covering 14 cities and running through the end of July.
