J.K. Rowling came out on top in a British magazine survey.
J.K. Rowling, author of the immensely lucrative "Harry Potter" series, worked her magic on readers of the UK's The Book Magazine.
In an online survey of Britain's greatest living writers, Rowling ranked ahead of other notable authors including Ian McEwan and Salman Rushdie. Rowling also received nearly three times as many votes as runner-up Terry Pratchett.
Editor Christine Kidney said the survey was a good indication of the impact these British writers made on their readers.
"Our survey provides a fascinating insight into what the British public thinks makes a 'great' writer," Kidney said. "It shows how a writer can connect with us, as if we were the only reader in the world, and it's why books prove to be such enduringly popular objects."
Over 300 million copies of the "Harry Potter" books have been sold worldwide. Rowling is currently writing the seventh and final book of the young wizard series.
