Director Michael Mann wants gritty version of "Miami Vice"

This Miami might be too bloody for the original Tubbs and Crocket

When director Michael Mann set out to remake the 1980s pop culture hit "Miami Vice," he didn't want pastels and catchy pop tunes setting the mood. Mann set out to make a movie with a darker tone, with more grit than the television series could ever get away with.

"The whole idea," Mann said, "was to do 'Miami Vice' for real and do it now...If you're going to do 'Miami Vice' for real, then you're not going to get into the cartoon stuff and you're not going to try to trigger recall of the show."

Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx convinced Mann moviegoers were ready for the film version. Foxx and his co-star, Colin Farrell play Sonny Crocket and Ricardo Tubbs, two undercover narcotics detectives investigating a Latin American drug ring. Audiences should expect more sex, blood and guns in this steamy film version.

"Who wants to go see another remake of a television show that has limited itself to the same standards that applied to the series...I wouldn't want to make it," Mann said.

"Miami Vice" opens in theaters July 28.
