The "American Idol" winner makes his mainstream comeback next month.

With original "American Idol" champ and Grammy-winner Kelly Clarkson still selling millions of copies of her "Breakaway" album, and recent contestants Taylor Hicks and Carrie Underwood in the spotlight, Ruben Studdard seems to be an afterthought for many music fans.

But the season two winner is set to make a comeback with his next record "The Return," his first mainstream R&B effort since 2003's "Soulful," due out Sept. 26. He released the gospel album "I Need an Angel" in 2004.

"I've had people ask me where I've been in the past few years so I thought calling it 'The Return' made sense," Studdard said. "The first track on the new record is 'The Return of the Velvet Teddy Bear,' so I just shortened it and made it the title of my CD. "With 'The Return,' I'm letting all the people who've followed me from 'American Idol' until now know that basically I'm back."

The 27-year-old singer won the "American Idol" competition in 2003, edging out runner-up Clay Aiken for the title.
