A new NBC program will let the public choose singers for the new Broadway show.
NBC announced a new reality show Tuesday that gives viewers the power to choose the cast of a new Broadway production of "Grease."
The show is set to air mid-season, with the musical premiering in June 2007 under "The Pajama Game" director Kathleen Marshall. It is based on the BBC's "How Do I Solve a Problem Like Maria?" in which singers competed for a spot in a "Sound of Music" production.
"Americans have grown up with these catchy tunes and appealing characters, and we think they'll love the chance to select the next dynamic duo to play Sandy and Danny," said NBC's Craig Plestis in a statement.
"Grease" originally opened on Broadway in 1972. Six years later, the film version starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John became one of the most successful movie musicals ever and featured the hit songs "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want."
