Project Runway Season 3 Episode 9

Design an Outfit For an International Jetsetter - Yourself

Heidi tells the designers to design the outfit for themselves, under the concept that they are jetsetters, and wear it down the runway themselves. The designers picked out models, the season one way, which is the fairest, and those models will be used in the next challenge.

Throughout the episode, we are beat over the head with Angela's confessionals revealing how daunting the international concept is for her, given her Ohio farm background. Hmm, I wonder why we keep hearing about how difficult this is for her. There is also a lovely moment when Neck Tattoo passive aggressively whines about the last competition, basically about Angela's mama. Angela pretty much tells him to stop being passive aggressive and talk straight. Neck Tattoo gives some righteous cop out of the "I have nothing to say to you" variety. His confessional voice over has him saying, "The madder she gets, the better I feel." This guy is so pathetic.

Gunn comes to check on the kids and tells Kayne his outfit is looking Elvis-like. Neck Tattoo is the first to finish and cold frost of injustice is already beginning to form over me.

Runway day arrives. Laura's dress is the usual bore of beigeness and of course the judges love it. Uli delivers another lovely multi-print dress, but this time the judges say they are bored of her style. Knight Rider delivers an all white outfit with cargo pants that keeps the judges in love with him. Jeff, I mean, Neck Tattoo trots out boring, tight black pants and a purple trim blazer. The judges are old enough to think this makes him look like a rock star. Kayne is a disaster in an all black ensemble that includes patterned shoulders. Michael Kors says it looks like a costume. Angela doesn't disappoint. She kicked it old school for this challenge. And, by old school, I mean vintage Angela. We're talking a shiny, ruby satin top coupled with copper capris, ooh with granny circles on the butt!

Rather than announce the winner and loser, Heidi tells the kids they are going on a trip. They pack and find out they have first-class tickets to Paris. Perfect opportunity to see how these outfits hold up after travel. Upon landing, the kids are taken to Parsons Paris. Knight Rider comments he didn't know they had a Parsons over there. I find myself saying out loud, "Me neither."The designers are introduced to famous designer Catherine Malandrino. Gun gives her the scores from the New York judges and it is explained that Malandrino will contribute her scores to the tally in order to announce the winner and loser. The kids do a runway show right there in their Paris studio. Most of the outfits traveled well except for Angela's.

Between Knight Rider and Neck Tattoo, Malandrino chooses Neck Tattoo as the winner. The bottom two is Kayne and Angela. Malandrino tells Kayne, "You look ridiculous." And tells Angela, "You are just coming from another world and you are not a jetsetter." Angela is out.

This is kind of weird. I thought for sure the final three would be Knight Rider, Uli and Angela. Isn't that the formula: the hidden talent, the sure thing and the underdog? I guess not. You know, I ragged on Angela a lot with the whole granny circles and her own admission that she can't sketch, but I'm going to miss her. It is true Angela's own style is ridiculous, but when given guidelines, like do Audrey Hepburn, she really comes through.

Neck Tattoo is consistently bad and Knight Rider should have totally taken this challenge. I loved to hate Angela. I despise having to hate Neck Tattoo. Hopefully, he'll be gone next week.
