Paris Hilton officially charged with DUI

Singer will appear in court Thursday

Paris Hilton was officially charged with DUI Tuesday and will be arraigned in California court Sept.28 after she was arrested driving with a .08 blood-alcohol content during a traffic stop earlier this month.

"The charges are consistent with California law and the circumstances of this case," Nick Velasquez, a spokesman for Los Angeles city prosecutors told the Associated Press.

Hilton claimed she only had one margarita at an event before driving home on the night of her arrest. She said she was not driving recklessly but "maybe I was speeding a little bit," according to the AP.

If convicted Hilton could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, the wire service reported. The minimum fine for a first time offender is probation, fine and alcohol rehabilitation program.
