Madonna Adopts African Child
11-Oct-2006
Written by: Jeannine Coppola
Father claims Madonna has saved his one-year-old son from a life of poverty.
According to Reuters, the father of an African boy told tabloids the pop star has adopted his one-year-old son from Malawi. The Sun and the Daily Mail soon reported that Madonna had chosen David Banda from an orphanage, whose mother died of complications after giving birth. This news comes despite that last week, a spokeswoman for Madonna denied statements made by African state officials that the performer had adopted a child. A spokeswoman in England would not return phone calls for comment on the latest reports.
The boy's father, Yohane Banda, 32, who claims he could not afford to raise his son, exclaimed, "I am very happy. As you can see there is poverty in my village." Although he did not meet Madonna, he was told a "famous U.S. musician" would be adopting his son. He replied by stating, “I know he will be very happy in America. We are told David will be coming back regularly to know his roots."
The 48-year-old singer already has a son and daughter, and plans to raise the child with her film director husband Guy Ritchie at their homes in Britain and the United States.
