The pop star signs the papers for her adoption of a Malawi child.
After days of unconfirmed media speculation, Madonna formally filed the adoption papers Thursday granting her and husband Guy Ritchie custody of a 1-year-old boy from Malawi.
The star couple adopted David from an orphanage, where he was taken after his mother died of birth complications. They are a lovely couple," said David's father Yohame Banda. "She asked me many questions. She and her husband seem happy with David. I am happy for him. Madonna promised me that as the child grows she will bring him back to visit."
Madonna and Ritchie filed the papers before a court judge and were given interim approval for the adoption, said Preston Kilimbe, director of child welfare services.
Madonna has one other child with Ritchie, 5-year-old Rocco. She also has a 9-year-old daughter, Lourdes.
The singer’s charity Raising Malawi is building an orphanage for up to 4,000 children. The orphanage will provide food and shelter, along with education and Kabbalah-based projects.
