Celebrities Protest Gas Facility Proposal
23-Oct-2006
Written by: Jeannine Coppola
Halle Berry and others care about pollution and energy.
Chron.com reports that several celebrities, including Pierce Bronsan and Halle Berry, came together to protest a natural gas facility that would be constructed 14 miles off the Mailbu coast.
Cindy Crawford, Jane Seymour, Dick Van Dyke and Tea Leoni also attended the event, with the purpose of increasing awareness about the energy industry investing billions to ship natural gas across oceans. So far, five facilities are proposed for California with three along the state's southern coast. BHP, an Australian-based company that is one the world's largest enterprises, desires to build the terminal for the facilities on the Malibu and Oxnard coast next year.
BHP officials claim the terminals will allow a "reliable source of low-polluting energy."
Brosnan hosted the protest, claiming he plans to oppose other proposed terminals in Long Beach and Port Hueneme.
Many surfers attended the event including Daryl Hannah on a pink board. A message will be sent to Govenor Arnold Schwarzenegger, who can veto it.
Halle Berry stated, "We have to use our voices and band together and stop this."
