“Death of a President“ is Thought Provoking, Well Made
27-Oct-2006

Controvesial “Death of a President“ lacks in controversy but is heavy on insight.
As it premieres in the United States this weekend, “Death of a President” – the controversial fake documentary about the assassination of President Bush – is both thought provoking and well made.
The documentary is filmed in the year 2008 and looks back on the 2007 assassination of Bush by a sniper at a Chicago convention. The movie has created controversy for its portrayal of the FBI and the fact the President is shot in the movie. It is important to note, using trick photography and sound effects, you never actually see Bush shot or bleeding.
The story begins telling of the infamous day. As Bush arrives at Chicago, 10,000 protestors become violent and are not peacefully protesting. After his speech, Bush is meeting with the crowd when the sniper shoots him twice. The story then follows the immediate response by new President Dick Cheney and his pushing for more Patriot Act Provisions. It also follows the FBI trying to figure out who fired the shots and how they focus on a Syrian man.
The documentary features interviews with the (fake) head of the Chicago FBI office, Bush’s advisor, suspects, the wife of the shooter, and protestors.
The movie does a good job using the interviews to tell the story of the shooting and its immediate aftermath. The story follows chronological order and is easy to follow. The way the FBI went about finding the suspect is the thought provoking part. Many are angry with the way Cheney is portrayed looking for some connection between the Syrian man arrested and the Syrian government. However, I thought it was interesting to see how the British filmmaker showed the process the FBI went through and how the country’s fears of terrorism led them down the path they took.
I didn’t think the movie was that controversial or had any part that shouldn’t be seen by mass audiences. In fact, you can see more risqué television by turning on anything during primetime.
I think more people should watch this movie than actually will. It makes you think about the whole terrorism issue and how we target suspects of crimes. There is nothing in the movie that made me upset and regardless of political affiliation, the movie does a splendid job telling the future.
