Herman painter snags award against stiff competition.
German-born abstract painter, Tomma Abts, was awarded the Turner Prize amid much surprise.
According to http://www.sfgate.com, the San Francisco Chronicle’s website, “The $49,000 prize was presented by Yoko Ono during a ceremony at London's Tate Britain gallery.” Afterwards, Abts graciously accepted the award, “Thank you so so much. It is a real honor to receive this prize."
Abts is the first female painter to be bequeathed this honor in the award’s 22-year history.
Some were shocked at the outcome. Other nominees that were thought to grab the prize included London artist Rebecca Warren, Mark Titchner, who uses lyrics from pop songs and phrases from political manifestos to create his wall paintings. Also, according to http://today.reuters.co.uk, England’s version of Reuters, “much of the pre-prize publicity centered on Phil Collins who set up an exhibit featuring a real-life office full of researchers wanting to interview people forever scarred by their appearances on Reality TV shows.”
The Turner Prize show will be on display at Tate Britain until Jan. 14.
