MPAA Trying to Bring Back NC-17 Rating
The Chairman of the Motion Picture Association of America, Dan Glickman, has asked the executives of the Sundance Film Festival to start using the NC-17 rating for the more edgy and controversial movies in this year's festival. The rating of NC-17 was created to replace the X-rating, but it never really stuck.
Independent filmmakers have often expressed their distaste for the MPAA rating system. It seems to be puzzling and shrouded in mystery. Glickman has started a campaign to make the rating system more accessible to filmmakers and more "user-friendly."
One movie, in particular, Teeth, has been picked up by Lions Gate and the Weinstein Company. Teeth is an off-beat comedy about a girl who discovers she has teeth inside of her vagina. While they do not want to cut the movie in order to achieve an R-rating, Lions Gate is free to put out an unrated film. They are not a member of the MPAA studios.
