12-Feb-2007
Written by: Jeannine Coppola

R and B singer’s autopsy confirms a fatal combination of drugs.

Playfuls.com reports that R and B Singer, Gerald Levert's unexpected death, last fall, was caused by the combined effect of prescription narcotics and over-the-counter drugs. Geauga County Cornor, Kevin Chartrand, who performed Levert's autopsy claimed Levert's body contained the pain killers Vicodin, Percocet and Darvocet as well as anti-anxiety medication, Xanax and two over-the-counter antihistamines.

Levert died on November 10, 2006 in his Newbury, Ohio home of what appeared to be a heart attack. The offical cause of death was labeled acute intoxication, marking the death as accidental. The autopsy also concluded that Levert had pneumonia.

Levert, who came from a musical family, was best known for his romantic and erotic songs. In fact, his 2002 album was titled, "The G Spot".

Levert's admirers included legends Patti Labelle and Aretha Franklin. After his death, Labelle stated, "Nobody was prepared for this-It's not for real to me that he is gone." Atlantic Record company also said in a posthumous press release, "He was one of the greatest voices of our time, who sang with unmatched soulfulness and power." In 2005, Aretha commented that "Gerald's got that stomp-down, hip-shaking earth soul. ... He pours his heart into it."

The Levert family, which included his 4 children, released the statement, As everybody knows, Gerald was a man who loved and breathed music. To his family and friends he was a man of strong character, who had an infectious personality and a zest for life. For his fans, his greatest love was touching the hearts and souls of all people through his music. At this very difficult time, we thank you for your prayers and hope you will understand our need for privacy." Levert was never married.
