Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg to Star in "The Fighter"
The Departed costars, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg, will star together again in The Fighter, based on the true story of boxer 'Irish' Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and half-brother Dicky Eklund (Damon).
Filming will begin in Boston this summer, if the two actors approve the final rewrite of the script.
"I've been dying to do a boxing movie my whole career," said Wahlberg. "It's something I'm very excited about."
The movie will follow Eklund, throwing away his own boxing career after being thrown in jail for drugs; his younger brother Ward, quitting his career when he was 26-years-old after some brutal bouts; and Eklund's encouragement of Ward to get back in the game, and coaching him to eventually become a lightweight champion, after he was released.
Damon beat out Wahlberg's real life brother, former New Kid on the Block, Donnie, for the role of Eklund.
There is no word on who will direct it, but according to the Boston Herald, Wahlberg wants The Departed director, Martin Scorsese!
