Mirren Caps Off Awards Reign with Royal Invitation

Mirren might meet her role’s real-life counterpart.
It looks like Helen Mirren will follow up her Academy Awards victory by meeting the monarch she portrayed. The real Queen Elizabeth II is reported to be seriously considering inviting the actress to Buckingham Palace for tea.
Mirren was awarded the Oscar for Best Actress for her starring role in The Queen, which depicts the aftermath of Princess Diana’s death. The British film was directed by Stephen Frears and has been received as a public relations success for the notoriously rigid and traditional royal family. The Queen depicts the British monarch’s struggle with the pressure whether to maintain protocol and tradition or shed her impersonal front and grieve with her people.
It also doesn’t hurt Mirren’s chance of an invitation that the actress acknowledged Elizabeth II in her acceptance speech, citing “her courage and her consistency,” and also thanking her as the reason for Mirren’s presence on the Oscar stage.
Mirren’s trophy case will contain several new editions for her latest role, among them a Screen Actor’s Guild Award, a BAFTA, and a Golden Globe, and of course, Oscar himself.
Along with Mirren, director Stephen Frears and screenwriter Peter Morgan are expected to receive an invitation to the palace in March.
