Star Trek XI in the Works
27-Feb-2007
Written by: Jess Boettger
Among those reported to be in talks: Damon, Brody, and Sinise.
Trekkie fans, rejoice. An eleventh Star Trek movie is finally in the works. Directing will be JJ Abrams, most recently of MI:3 fame, and that is about all that anyone knows for sure. Beyond Abrams' involvement, everything else is mere rumor, speculation, and wild guessing. Such as the whispers that Matt Damon is in talks to helm the movie as a young James T. Kirk, reprising the role made famous by William Shatner. Or that Adrien Brody (The Pianist, The Village) is donning prosthetic pointy ears and Leonard Nimoy's iconic role. And also that Gary Sinise, of CSI:NY fame, will play the charismatic Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy. Add in speculations that Daniel Dae Kim has expressed interest in the role of Lt. Sulu and James McAvoy is vying for the role of Montgomery Scott (aka Scotty), and it would be an unprecedented occurrence in Star Trek history if all the rumors turned out to be true.
However, the only thing known for sure is Abrams’ involvement. Not only will he be directing, Abrams will also write and produce for the project.
Most notable of the rumored contenders would be Damon, whose involvement would lend the franchise greatly needed star power it has lacked in recent years. This is the first Trekkie movie in the works since Star Trek: Nemesis. There are also currently no television shows in production for the lagging franchise.
When it is finally shot, Star Trek XI will focus on a youthful Kirk and friends, following Kirk and Spock through their time at Starfleet Academy and chronicling the aspiring heroes' very first space mission.
