Musicals like Dreamgirls and Chicago have been big hits among movie viewers in the last couple of years. For those who enjoy music, here’s a list of the latest music-related DVDS.
In the spirit of St. Patty’s day, this Dribble kicks off with Celtic Tides - A Musical Odyssey. This DVD takes a look at Celtic music through interviews, and features the landscapes of Ireland, Scotland, and Eastern Canada. It shows how the countries themselves helped shape Celtic music. If Rock n' Roll is more your thing, then the American Hardcore DVD should be right up your alley. It’s a documentary about the history of American Punk Rock music from 1979 to 1986. It includes interviews and rare live footage from bands like Black Flag, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, SS Decontrol, and the Dead Kennedys. The DVD also contains director and writer commentary, deleted scenes, bonus performances, and a photo gallery of Edward Colver.
Now we head into the smooth sounds of jazz with Night School - An Evening of Stanley Clarke and Friends. The DVD shows footage of the third annual Stanley Clarke Scholarship Concert that took place in October 2002, at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, California. Among the famous performers on the DVD are Stevie Wonder, Wallace Roney, Bela Fleck, Sheila E., Stewart Copeland, Flea, Wayman Tisdale, and Marcus Miller. The concert DVD is interspersed with commentary by Stanley Clarke.
David Letterman’s sidekick, Paul Shaffer, hosts the next DVD, Fats & Friends. The DVD shows both solo and collective performances by Fats Domino, Ray Charles, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The legendary concert took place at the Storyville night club in New Orleans. Fats & Friends does not contain any special features.
Comedy legend, Dick Van Dyke, closes out this edition of the DVD Dribble. Dick Van Dyke - In Rare Form shows vintage performances by the comedian before he hit it big. The DVD features brand-new introductions by Pat Boone, two bonus performances, and an episode of the 1959 panel show, Laugh Line.
Music of a variety of genres, as well as some comedy, was represented in this Dribble. It goes to show you, DVDs that don’t consist of movies can be entertaining as well.
