DVD Dribble
11-Mar-2007
Written by: Michelle Vaccaro

This DVD Dribble consists of independent films.

It’s time once again to showcase some independent films. The following is a list of films you might not have heard of, but may want to check out.

This edition starts off with Jailbait. It’s a drama about a guy who commits a victimless crime and ends up in prison for longer than he should have been. He ends up getting himself into a relationship with a fellow inmate who tries to teach him how to survive in prison. There are no special features on this DVD.

In The Sin Eater, a young girl feels responsible for her sister’s death and looks to the “Sin Eater” to take away her pain and try and help her feel better. While on her journey for salvation, she uncovers some interesting truths about her family. There are no special features on this DVD either.

Kate Clinton brings her comedy to DVD with Here! Comedy Presents Katie Clinton. The 90-minute DVD includes her standup performances about such things as pop and pope culture and good and bad Bush fatigue.

Now it’s time for a thrill with Thr3e. In the film, a murderer is on the loose. During his killing spree, he leaves riddles and puzzles. The DVD includes both the full screen and widescreen versions of the film as well as the trailer. It has an English audio track along with English and Spanish subtitles.

We move on to a lighter note with For Your Consideration. It’s a comedy about actors making a movie called "Home for Purim," that they hope will be nominated for a bunch of awards. The DVD contains eighteen deleted/alternate scenes and outtakes, commentary by the writers, “Home for Purim” poster gallery, and the theatrical trailer. The audio tracks are in English, but there are also English, Spanish, and French subtitles.

Requiem shows the struggles of an epileptic girl who is attending college. She befriends a priest who in turn helps her deal with her childhood. The DVD is in German, but contains English and Spanish subtitles.

Rowan Atkinson, mostly known for his role as Mr. Bean, stars in Keeping Mum. In this film, Atkinson plays a priest who is so focused on writing his sermon that he doesn’t notice that his wife is having an affair and that his kids are in trouble. The DVD features filmmaker commentary, original Rosie Jones beginning with commentary, bonus scenes with commentary, an extended scene, a making-of featurette, and bloopers and outtakes.

Another DVD that deals with family problems is Tideland. In the film, a young woman befriends Barbie doll heads in the wake of her mother’s death from a heroine overdose. There are many special features on this DVD which include an introduction, director and screenwriter commentary and interviews, “Getting Gilliam” featurette, deleted scenes, “Filming Green Screen,” and trailers. It is only available with English audio tracks.

The Dribble closes out with a documentary about one of the most famous expletives. Even the title is censored. F**K shows the origin and popularity of the word. The DVD features director commentary, extended interviews, interviews with Bill Plympton and Steve Anderson, extended and deleted scenes, f**k counter, and the theatrical trailer.

There were some interesting storylines in the independent films covered in this edition of the DVD Dribble. Most of them were serious, but there were a few DVDs scattered with laughs.
