Regis Philbin to Undergo Triple Bypass
12-Mar-2007
Written by: Jess Boettger

Talk show host will go under the knife sometime this week.

Regis Philbin announced on the Monday morning edition of “Live with Regis and Kelly” that he will undergo triple bypass surgery sometime this week. Philbin co-hosts the show with Kelly Ripa, who replaced former co-host Kathie Lee Gifford in 2001. Philbin complained to Ripa, “Darn it, I don’t want to do it. Nobody wants to do it.”

Philbin, 76, expects to have the surgery this week, and to take as much time as he needs to recuperate. He has appeared on various talk shows and game shows over the past four decades. The website for “Live with Regis and Kelly” boasts that Philbin is recorded in the Guiness Book of World Records as having logged the most on-camera TV hours ever. Over the course of his career, the TV personality has racked up 15,662 hours on-screen. Philbin started “The Morning Show” in 1983 and was joined by Kathie Lee Gifford two years later, in 1985. Gifford left the show in 2001, to be replaced by Ripa.
