Lesson Plan for a Brighter Day

Why preschoolers are on the right track

One of the many awesome things about kids is that they live in the here and now. They don’t live in the past and they don’t worry about tomorrow.

I think we, as adults, can learn a few things from children, like how to get along. That’s one of the first things they teach in pre-school – how to share. We teach our children not to clobber someone over the head with a plastic hammer (yes that really happened but we won’t discuss that here). But the point is, why should we, as adults, settle for anything less than what we teach our children?

A few basic rules taught in kindergarten: Be a good listener. Be a good helper. Be a team player. Walk, don’t run. Be respectful. A place for everything and everything in its place. Follow directions. Every day is a fresh start. Patience is a virtue.

(Ok, so preschoolers may not be patient!) But we, as adults, can set a good example for our little ones so someday they will grow up to be adults that actually listen to their spouse and put their dirty socks in the hamper. And…be understanding when basketball playoffs begin and their wives high-tail it out the door to get their nails done.

So, the next time you’re unbelievably frustrated with something, think back to those basic lessons from childhood. You may just surprise yourself by how your whole day can be turned around for the better. And then again, maybe not…in which case, perhaps it’s time for a recess, preferably one including a leisurely island cruise, or a flight to the moon.
