Bernie Mac to Retire From Stand-Up
21-Mar-2007
Written by: Courtney Thompson
He announced on David Letterman that he’ll retire after the filming of his new movie.
Bernie Mac plans to leave stand-up comedy after he finishes the filming of his movie, The Whole Truth, Nothing but the Truth, So Help Me Mac, after 30 years of the lone microphone stand, bright lights, and hysterical audience.
“I’m going to still do my producing, my films, but I want to enjoy my life a little bit,” he said on Late Show with David Letterman. “I missed a lot of things, you know. I was a street performer for two years. I went into clubs in 1977.”
Mac has accomplished a lot in his career. He made his television debut on Russel Simmon’s Def Comedy Jam in 1992, was nominated for two Emmys, appeared in several movies, and authored two books (I Ain’t Scared of You and Maybe You Never Cry) based on his life.
But he wants to see greener pastures of a more settled life.
“Oh, man, you miss out on so much, you know,” Mac said. "And you live in all these hotels - I was on the road 47 weeks out of the year.”
His new movie, Pride, will be released on Friday.
