Sex, drugs and religion make up this edition of the DVD Dribble.
This edition of the DVD Dribble is full of films involving sin and despair and, conversely, others about hope and religion.
The sacred power of Mana is the basis of the first DVD in this Dribble. Mana Beyond Belief focuses on how people, places, and objects can have spiritual powers. The 95-minute DVD contains English subtitles.
Angelina Jolie’s estranged father, Jon Voight, plays the recently deceased Pope in Pope John Paul II. Voight received an Emmy nomination for the performance. The film shows the young life of Karol Wojtyla as well as his journey when he becomes Pope John Paul II. A sixteen-page booklet is included with the DVD. It also contains Spanish subtitles.
Now we move on to a totally different subject with Shortbus. The film, which was written and directed by John Cameron Mitchell, of Hedwig and the Angry Itch, follows the sexual relationships of a group of New Yorkers at an exclusive club. The DVD does not include any special features.
Up next is Un chant d’amour. It’s a French film, but don’t worry if you don’t understand French, there are English subtitles. In the film, two prisoners stuck in solitary confinement discover a way to communicate. The DVD includes an introduction by Jonas Mekas, commentary by Kenneth Anger, the 1981 documentary “Genet,” an interview with Jean Genet, and a booklet with stills.
A troubled marriage is the basis for the film Tempest. The film follows a man who goes to Greece and falls in love with a carefree woman, while his wife spends time with a Greek tycoon. The DVD has English audio tracks and English and French subtitles.
Heath Ledger plays a poet who becomes romantically involved with an art student in Candy. The couple becomes addicted to heroin. The DVD includes commentaries by the director and writer, “Candy: The Path to Wild Abandon,” “Writing on the Wall: Candy’s Poem in Motion,” and the theatrical trailer. It has English audio tracks and Spanish subtitles.
The work and inspiration of a struggling artist is the basis of The Art of Passion. The DVD features audio commentary by director Arthur Bjorn Egeli, interviews and deleted scenes, essay by composer Michael Errington, photo gallery and virtual location maps, talent files, and trailer. Also included is a DVD-ROM with screensavers and wallpapers.
Trapped, by Here Films, is about a woman trying to balance her work as an internet security expert, and her relationships with her girlfriend and daughter. The DVD does not include any special features.
Mena Suvari and Breckin Meyer star in Caffeine. The film divulges the sexual secrets of the staff and customers at a London café. The DVD contains bloopers as well as English audio tracks and English and Spanish subtitles.
There are a variety of DVDs that were covered in this edition of the DVD Dribble, ranging from films about sex and drugs to others about the life of the Pope.
